KVL5000 displays "Not supported by device" when trying to keyload AES in APX 4000, APX 6000, APX7000, APX8000, or APX Mobile.

Symptom(s)

KVL5000 displays "Not supported by device"

Issue

The APX radio enters “Keyloading” mode when connected to the KVL5000, but all attempts to load any encryption keys result in an error message “Not supported by device” shown on the KVL5000.

KVL5000 is detecting an error condition that prevents loading of the keys.

Environment

APX 4000, APX 6000, APX7000, APX8000, or APX Mobile configured with “Secure Operation” set to “Hardware” in the radio codeplug.

Resolution

Confirm the APX radio is configured with “Secure Operation” set to “Hardware” in the radio codeplug using CPS.  Consult the KVL user manual and verify that the correct cable is being used for the APX model and type of key being loaded.

  1. The KVL 5000 can check if the algorithm is loaded on an APX radio with “Secure Operation” set to “Hardware” by using the “Settings" > "Manage Firmware" >  "External module firmware" >  "Firmware information" feature. Or if the APX radio has a display, the algorithm can be checked by placing the radio into Service Mode. Consult the user manual for instructions to enter Service Mode.
  2. If loading a Traffic Encryption Key (TEK) or Key Encryption Key (KEK), confirm the APX radio has the algorithm loaded corresponding to the key.  Also, try using a different communication method by either enabling or disabling the “Radio over USB” feature.  Encryption Keys (KEK, TEK) can be loaded using both USB and RS232.

  3. If loading a Radio Authentication key, ensure that the “Radio over USB” feature is disabled on the KVL 5000.  Radio Authentication keys can only be loaded to APX radios using RS232.To enable or disable use of USB communication to the APX radio from the KVL 5000, change the “Settings” > “USB key loading” > “Radio over USB” control on the KVL 5000.
