Indoor location accuracy concerns with APX NEXT or N70

Symptom(s)

Location accuracy may show a distant location such as a nearby highway or intersection instead of the friendly street address.

Location may not be accurate within large structures.

Issue

When the radio does not have a GPS fix, it will use an application service known as SkyHook to provide indoor location.   SkyHook location is dependent on anonymous background data collection from similar devices to make Wifi/LTE positioning more accurate.

When a user enables SmartLocate and does not enable WiFi, then location accuracy will not be as precise when a GPS location fix is not available.

This may be more noticeable during initial deployment or with small radio fleets.

Environment

This is most likely to occur indoors. Outdoors the GPS should obtain a location fix and provide accurate location coordinates.

Resolution

It is recommended that WiFi be enabled and switched on to improve accuracy indoors.  SkyHook does not require the radio to connect to the WiFi AP to improve location, it just needs to be able to detect the WiFi signal.

Skyhook's accuracy improves as more relative data points are accumulated regarding the location.  As a result, indoor accuracy may be poor during initial testing and deployment but will steadily improve as devices are deployed and more data points are collected for a given area and device type.
