Symptom(s)
My battery fails to charge when it's inserted in the charger, accompanied by a red flashing LED light.
The LED light on the charger is blinking red when I try to charge a brand-new battery.
My battery, which was kept in long-term storage is not displaying any IMPRES information either on the charger or the radio.
Issue
The most common reason for these symptoms is the battery being in a deep discharge state as a result of improper care. Motorola Solutions Inc. (MSI) ships all Li-Ion batteries at a state of charge less than 30% of their rated capacity in compliance with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) policy.
Therefore batteries should be charged within 1 month of receipt in a Motorola-approved charger. Failure to do so may result in a battery getting into this deep discharge state. Any battery under 4 volts is considered deeply discharged state. NOTE: Charging in a non-Motorola charger may lead to reduced performance and battery damage.
In addition, if new batteries are going to be put into long-term storage they should be maintained properly while in storage.
- New batteries that will be stored should be charged to greater than 50% (but less than 100%) state of charge within 1 month of receipt. Every 9 months, batteries must be recharged to greater than 50% state of charge.
- Batteries removed from service for storage should be charged to greater than 50% state of charge. Every 9 months, batteries must be recharged to greater than 50% state of charge.
- Do not store batteries attached to radios or host devices. This will minimize the current drain on the battery.
NOTE: The above information on storage and care can be found in the Motorola Solutions Battery Use, Storage, and Care Recommendations. Following these recommendations should prevent a battery from deep discharge. Resolution
Not all batteries in this condition will be recoverable. Batteries not recovered should be replaced by the customer. The batteries in this deeply discharged state (<4v) may be able to be recovered following the steps below.
For the best results use a multi-unit charger (MUC) running the latest firmware.
- Clean the battery contacts to ensure proper contact with the charger.
- Insert the battery into an Impres charger
- If you see a solid red LED it signifies it is charging.
- If the battery has never been placed into an Impress charger it will start the initialization/calibration process. This may take up to 12 hrs,
- If MUC displays "Battery Voltage is too low - Waiting to Charge".
- Insert and remove the battery 5 times leaving it in the charger. NOTE: When you insert the battery into the charger, it will "check in" with the charger and gradually add voltage to reach approximately 4 volts. The same process occurs if you leave the battery in the charger. This charging process may take up to 12 hours. It's important to note that a solid red LED light indicates that the battery is charging.
- If the battery has not charged in 12 hours then repeat these steps in another pocket of the MUC.
- If the battery has not successfully charged after following these steps the battery must be replaced.
