Audio distortion may be experienced when using a Scott SCBA with Vibra-Alert Low Air Alarm.

Symptom(s)

Audio distortion may be experienced when the Scott Vibra-Alert low air alarm is active.

Issue

The Vibra-Alert Low Air Alarm from Scott Fire & Safety is a mechanically generated sound that originates near the air regulator of the Scott Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). The tonal content of the alarm and the proximity of the alarm to the voice port can interfere with a firefighters ability to effectively communicate while the alarm is active.

Environment

The Scott Vibra-Alert can impact audio for all APX portable radios and audio accessories.

Resolution

The firefighter should immediately address the low air condition by replacing the air tank and silencing the Vibra-Alert alarm. If radio communication is required while the Vibra-Alert is active, speech should be elevated and the radio/accessory microphone should be placed such that the audio distortion is minimized.
