Summary
Starting in 2025.2, a new Flex client updater service will be installed the first time you login after your upgrade.
A new service will be installed in your Windows Services menu
Service name - FlexClientUpdaterService
New name in Add or Remove Programs - Flex Public Safety Suite
Reference
Notes on first time update:
- You will need administrator privileges to install the new client the first time - this will install the service. For clients already installed, this service should be installed automatically after first login post upgrade. If new installs are required, or administrator permissions are required to elevate the install, please make arrangements to have bandwidth to complete this process.
- The first client update after your upgrade to 2025.2+ will take longer than usual, please plan on this.
- The location of the client installation has changed -
%localappdata%\Spillman -> %localappdata%\Motorola Solutions
%appdata%\Spillman -> %appdata%\Motorola Solutions
%programdata%\Spillman -> %allusersprofile%\Motorola Solutions
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Spillman -> %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\Spillman
%programdata%\ESRI -> %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\ESRI - Make note of all changes for any protection suite considerations. For a full list please reference KB0022353
- With the updated client install locations, the location that Flex and Flex Mobile shortcuts point to have been changed. Shortcuts placed on the desktop and the Start Menu are automatically updated in the client update process, but custom shortcuts deployed via Group Policy, or saved on the task bar would need to be manually updated.
- The "Spillman" client will automatically be uninstalled and removed from the Add or Remove programs list.
- Note: The new client cannot connect to a Flex version 2024.2 or lower. In the rare event that this is necessary, the new client would need to be removed, and the original client installed. If you have any secondary servers that need to be updated to the latest version to avoid this, please schedule these upgrades.
- After this service has been successfully installed, all of the above should no longer apply for future Flex client updates.
- The new UI executable is also bundled in this new installer (named 'Flex Suite') next to the original executable. See KB0036435 if you are interested in taking a look at the new UI
Benefits from the updated launcher:
- .NET updates will be installed by the service automatically as required, no more end user installation will be necessary.
- For workstations that do not have .NET 8 already installed, this should install the packages automatically.
- Flex clients will be able to update without elevated administrator privileges for users who historically cannot modify these install locations.
